1/ Seattle: We bunked at the spiff Kimpton Palladian Hotel, where out corner room offered a silver-of-water view and a large, elegant bathroom floored with hexagonal marble tiles. Their bar was well-suited for cherishing a glass and though it was our first visit, the front desk made us feel like old chums.
2/ Vancouver, BC: So many of today’s mixologists remind us of beginning writers, besotted with modifiers and their own cleverness. Their drinks sag under the weight of too many ingredients, most of them fat-washed or from bottles with umlat-rich lettering. Rarely do we encounter a novel cocktail with the simple stature of a G&T or Whiskey Sour, the sort Fred Astaire or Rita Hayworth might sip while trading wit.
